Am still getting to grips with my new Virgin telly with a squillion channels and still nothing to watch except the next show, which I spotted on a random channel-surf and am actually staying up for due to apathy and couch-potato-ness. It's called 'Badly dubbed porn', and apparently contains footage from pr0n films dubbed over by 'well-known British comedy actors'.

huh.

*is mildly agog*

ETA. okay, I could take precisely 3 minutes of *that*. I have a feeling the dialogue is possibly worse than the original. *eyeroll*.

Sitting here watching MADE, and it's about a skinny nerd (according to the subtitles) who wants to be a football stud, and he's busy getting killed out there on the field. But he's trying so *hard*, bless.

What I want to know is WHERE is the SGA AU of this? - John Sheppard, skinny 14 year old maths whiz, wanting to play football, getting the chance to live his dreams when the MADE guys rock into town? It would explain so much (at least in my head) :)

for any charitable SG-1 fans on my flist, I have a favour to ask. I've never been in the fandom, but with [info]synecdochic's awesome new series (Take these broken wings), and with [info]dodificus recording [info]paian's wonderful 'Rules of Evidence', to which I'm now addicted, I *really* want to give it a whirl.

Is there an SG-1 equivalent of [info]seperis's fantastic SGA recslist? - I'm starting to investigate the who's who of the fandom as of this weekend, but if anyone has any pointers, or even an idea of the authors to look for, or the classics in the fandom that are used to suck newbies in I'd be really grateful.

I've had an incredibly evilly sucky few days and any Jack/Daniel schmoop / first time / domestic fic would be unbelievably welcomed.

ETA: I've been doing some research, and I have found a lot of stuff (yeah, I know, 10 YEARS worth of fandom:), so the problem is more that the sheer volume is a bit overwhelming. I've only just started watching the show from the beginning properly ([info]janedavitt you are a goddess), so ideally I'm looking for fic set in the first 4 or 5 seasons, because from what I gather, Daniel's character changes quite a lot from various traumas that the writers seem to enjoy inflicting on him, and I think I'd rather not get ahead of myself in the spoiler department until I've at least had a bit of a chance to catch up on canon

UK peeps with BT lines - does anyone know what it means to get repeated calls that, when answered, just beep at you?

Someone or something's been trying to get through at regular intervals for the last hour, but when I pick up, it's that beep, beep, beep a bit like a fax, but I don't think someone's trying to fax us at 11pm at night!

God, surely I'm too old to still be living like a student? it's 11.30am on a SUnday, and I'm still in my pj's, eating cold pizza, tea and mini-oreo's (they're so tiny!) for breakfast brunch while perusing gig-listings

So, um, Iron and Wine at the Shepherd's Bush Empire on the 31st October anyone? If any London flisters are interested, you *might* catch the last few tickets on sale for Jose Gonzalez at the Union Chapel in October at wegottickets.com. And I'm debating on going to see Feist in September too.

And I wonder why I don't have any money left, but seriously, live music is one of the main reasons I *moved* to London, and I'm ashamed that I haven't made more of an effort before.

Imogen Heap live is just awesome!

Out of the blue, a friend of mine called me today to say that there were free tickets going for her gig at the itunes festival at the ICA this evening, and on a whim I decided to go. I was so not expecting it to be so intimate! She was at a piano, in a tiny room - if there were 200 people there I'd be surprised, and half of them seemed to be her family and friends and ex-bandmembers. Her voice just soars, and her piano playing is fantastic - there's a classical undertone to a lot of the accompaniment which really appeals to me. Apparently the concert is going to be up for download on itunes soon.

Plus I got sort of chatted up while waiting in the queue outside by a gorgeous young Irish boy and his mates - very earnest, funky jacket wearing boys, who were a)waiting to see Imogen Heap, b)interested in my Palm, and e-books and gadgetry in general, and c)chatting about Narnia. Needless to say it was a nice ego boost, as well as a pleasant way to pass the fairly long wait :)

*AND* I found out today that Andrew Bird is playing at Shepherd's Bush tomorrow (ie 11 July) if any London flisters are interested? And I'm off to see Kate Walsh next week - I guess this is the big benefit to living in London.

*twirls off to bed*

I'm not sure whether or not to get overexcited because

a)guests can pull out at any time, and, seriously, Callum at a con? I wouldn't be surprised if he gets cold feet at the last minute, and

b) Callum and cons are two very unmixy things. What if we scare him, or scar him permanently? *g* Hell, I went to Peg3 and was a bit skeered of the excess of fannish love in the room.

Well, technically day 6 by the time I post this *eyes computer clock*, but it will still be Friday for most of you on my flist, so I'm going to count it as an entry for this week.

So, for the last recs set I present three stories that make me unashamedly, toe-curlingly happy. Each of these fics is like a long drawn-out date - they're all about two characters spending time together, getting to know each other and having fun. Enjoy :)

***

Sometimes you just need a break from life ...

[info]yin_again and [info]ladycat777's Liberty
SGA - McKay/Sheppard

Think of this as the longest, most unashamedly gratifying, wish-fulfilling, hot-chocolate-and-a-bubblebath date in the history of ever. John and Rodney get given a magical time out from life for a bit. Even heroes need a break (and some serious pampering) sometimes.

Rodney surfing. There's something incredibly precious about that, the way he focuses that brilliant mind on each gentle curve of the tide, body big and almost clumsy as he forces it do what he wants it to, instead of catering to its various whims and desires. But when he's on that board, poised and getting it, the rush and lift-off, and the joy...

Rodney catches two more waves, lasting a little bit longer each time, before he smacks John on the shoulder and says, "Okay, enough with the spacing out. Surf!"

They surf, playing in the waves, cheating gravity, harnessing momentum, and they're happy. John can't remember the last time he's felt so good, despite the fact that his muscles start to shake and he's got sand in some remarkably inappropriate places.

He rides one last wave in, almost all the way to the shore, where Rodney's lying face-down on his board, panting and bobbing in the shallow water. John props his forearms on his own board, letting his knees settle to the sandy bottom.

"That was..." he says, making a lazy gesture with one hand.

"Yeah," Rodney says, looking up. "It was."

sometimes you get a completely fresh start...

[info]norah's Breaking Point
Point Break/Fast&Furious - Johnny Utah/Brian O'Conner

Talk about an abundance of hotass...*fans self*. Brian fixes Johnny's car. Johnny teaches Brian to surf. It's two guys with a lot more in common than they realise just hanging out together, doing guy things in manly backslapping ways. There's a great build up of tension throughout, and Johnny's endearing hesitancy about the whole idea of the relationship is one of my favourite things about this fic.

There was another silence as they both stared upward into the dark. "Is it just me, or are the stars spinning a little?" Johnny asked after a while.

Brian snorted. "Well, the Earth is spinning, but you shouldn't be able to see that. And it was overcast today, so you shouldn't be able to see the stars, either. I think I just tackled you too hard and you're seeing Tweety-Bird cartoon stars, my friend."

Johnny elbowed him. "That what you call a tackle? Man, no wonder they kicked you off the high school football team!"

"Naw," Brian said. "You think I tackle all the boys like that? Only you, baby."

Johnny didn't have a comeback for that.

After a while, he picked himself up off the sand and offered Brian a hand, and they headed back to their dying fire.

It was in a drunken silent camaraderie that they picked up the empties and the lighter fluid, kicked sand on the coals, retrieved the football, and headed back toward their houses. Brian even helped carry on the way back, and things felt easy again. For the moment. Time enough to deal with anything else later.

and sometimes you find that you're already where you need to be...

[info]joandarck's Missing Out
Hot Fuzz - Nicholas/Danny

In which Nicholas is horrified at the realisation that yeah, spending so much time with your (work) partner is probably unhealthy, and then proceeds to try and *avoid* the whole dating thing. The characterisation in this is just spot on, and the tone of the fic is so true to the film that I like to think that Messrs Pegg and Frost would approve :)

Danny looked at him with the trustingly confused attentiveness of large dog, waiting for direction.

"Never mind. Look. Let me put this in simplest terms. I cannot have a drink with you this evening. I need to water my peace lily."

Piece by piece, Danny retreated into sullen dignity and turned himself back to face the road. "Right then," he said. "Never did understand why that takes all night..."

"It just does."

As Danny's response was technically sotto voce, Inspector Angel chose to ignore it.

Sometimes the one you want has been standing right in front of you all along...

[info]resonant8's Missing scene from A Beautiful Lifetime Event
SGA - McKay/Sheppard

This is a gorgeous AU snippet to an awesome fic ([info]astolat's A Beautiful Lifetime Event), where John and Rodney kinda do the whole domestic thing backwards - see, first there's the kid, then there's the moving in together, and only *then* do they realise that there's a few things they've really been missing along the way...

Rodney was sitting on the couch, and he leapt to his feet when John came in. His shirt was tucked in, which for Rodney was almost black-tie. He wrung his hands for a second and then dropped them down hastily to his sides, and John would have liked to say something that would calm him down, but he was nervous as hell himself. Even though it was only Rodney.

"Well." Rodney clasped his hands in front of him. His hair had comb tracks in it. It made John's throat hurt.

sometimes you can't have what you think you want...

[info]icarusancalion's Tanlines and Dogtags
SGA - Sheppard & Lorne

I find this a really interesting fic, because I think the characterisation of Sheppard here is rather different from the usual. He's not...nice? (if that's the right word here) He's flawed and he's human and he's manipulative and he feels oh so solidly real in a way that I don't often see in fic. The premise, and the scene which makes this a dating fic, is Lorne taking artsy photos of Sheppard on a beach. Naked. (just to be clear there's nekkidness on both sides)

*pauses a moment for the visuals*

*rewinds*

*pauses again*

The images and the tension between the two of them is just...guh. And at this point I flail because words fail me. Just read it.

"I get copies of everything?" John asked.

"Yeah."

"The jeans come off?"

Lorne winced. He was going to be his commanding officer's soft core porn collection. "Sure."

and sometimes you get all you want and more...

[info]wesleysgirl's On life and living
SGA - McKay/Sheppard

Aaand more John and Rodney with kids to bookend this recs set, because frankly, you can never have enough.

This is a lovely, slow, gentle earth AU where widowed John has a daughter, and meets Rodney by accident in a museum one day. I love the build up of the relationship, and the way their lives rearrange in small but important ways until they all fit together. High up on my comfort-fic list.

Kayla licks her ice cream, which is melting down over her knuckles and dripping onto her shorts. Good thing she only likes vanilla. "Is he buying you a hat, Daddy?"

"I think so." They sit there for a few minutes, John taking a couple of furtive licks of Rodney's ice cream when it starts running over the edge of the cone, until Rodney comes back and plunks a beach hat -- a pink beach hat with the zoo's logo on it -- down onto John's head.

"I was right," Rodney says, bouncing on his heels a little bit and looking disgustingly smug. "That's a good color for you."

"It's pink," John says.

"Pink is for girls," Kayla chimes in.

"That's the sort of genderist thinking that's damaging our society," Rodney tells her. "Besides, it wasn't even true until some time in the 50s." He takes his cone back from John and fits the whole, albeit half-melted, scoop of ice cream into his mouth, slurping it obscenely.

There's no such thing as too much Rodney McKay, today's common thread for these SGA-themed recs.

Sometimes what happens after a date is the most memorable thing about the evening...

Yoshino by [info]auburnnothenna and [info]eretria.
SGA - McKay/Carter/Sheppard

Cherry blossoms, tuxedos and what happens after dinner with the president. I'll admit to usually steering clear of this particular threesome grouping, but this story makes the three of them make sense together. Beautifully written and lyrical; dreamy and hot.

They walked down to the Reflecting Pool toward the Lincoln Memorial. The dark water reflected the wide steps and Doric columns mirror sharp. The rippled surface reminded Sam of event horizons and quantum mirrors, as though she could step through it into the next universe, but her reflection was there too and it was only water. Petals floated on the surface. The scent of the blossoming trees hung heavy in the air, noticeable despite the city smells, and Sam breathed deep, catching a light whiff of cologne from both Rodney and Sheppard.

sometimes it's about what *doesn't* happen...

[info]runpunkrun's How to date an asshole
SGA - McKay/Sheppard

For a complete change of pace from the previous rec, another fun, fast, hot fic in [info]runpunkrun's inimitable, accomplished style.

Dating Rodney McKay can be hard work, it really can.

"It's not dirty, not in the way you think, and it's so hot." He mouths kisses across Rodney's belly. "We can stop if you don't like it, but you will, I promise."

Rodney sighs and his legs fall open and John thinks he might be getting somewhere, except Rodney's on another page entirely -- sound asleep and dreaming.

sometimes the things you least expect to work, do...

[info]thedeadparrot's High School Is Not Another Name For Hell
House/SGA - House/McKay

Gregory House, Rodney McKay, the high school prom. What in here is *not* to love...? Great characterisation for both of them, and really, now that I've read this, the idea of House and McKay as a pairing is just *priceless*. There needs to be so much more of this, there really does. (find more snippets in this 'verse at [info]parrotfic)

The kid smirks. At least it's not a scowl. "Yeah, and they're right. Is it a deep insecurity or just plain self-absorption that causes the non-stop talking?"

Rodney takes on scowling duty instead. "Oh, ha ha. Just because I'm smarter than everyone else and have no qualms letting people know it means that I have weird insecurity issues or that I'm self-absorbed. It's all just annoying social niceties that get in the way of actually getting anything done."

The kid nods. "I think I'm going to go with both."

and sometimes things work out even better than you were hoping...

[info]lyra_sena's 80 Proof and its sequel Pier 8
SGA - McKay/Sheppard

This was posted quite a while ago (in fandom years anyway), and it's one of my absolute favourite High School AU fics. It's John and Rodney on a beach, getting to know each other and maybe learning a little bit more about themselves in the process.

Yep, John’d seen it all before, but this – this was something else. Sure, most kids his age who came out here with their families looked like they wanted to die and drown themselves in the surf, but none of them (and John felt pretty damn confident on this point) came bearing an umbrella, overstuffed bag from which no less than five bottles of sunscreen lotion peeked over the edge, and a folded Adirondack chair. John didn’t even know they made folding Adirondack chairs. Jeez.
